The NBA's promise to relocate the 24 6-foot basketball sculptures that were positioned around Indianapolis during the NBA All-Stars Weekend in Indianapolis in February came true. The sculpture highlighting Muncie Central's historic eight state basketball championships now has a home in the Fieldhouse lobby that is accessible from North Walnut Street.
The overall art project was called “Hoosier Hysteria.” The Muncie Central sculpture is called “Muncie Central’s Unmatched Record of Success.” The artist for the Bearcat sculpture is Mitchell Schuring, a graphic designer and mural artist from Bedford, Indiana.
Muncie Central has won more state basketball championships prior to class basketball than any other high school in the nation. As a result, the school’s basketball history also is featured in The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Muncie Central is the only high school in the nation to have an exhibit in the national basketball hall of fame. Another place to learn about Bearcat basketball is the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle, Indiana.
The public voted in 2023 to select the most memorable moments in Indiana basketball history from a list of 50 suggestions made by a committee of sports journalist, members of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, former coaches and players, former administrators and other experts.
